In the morning all of the elementary students were witness to a live performance of The Magic School Bus: Lost in Space at the Garde Arts Theatre. Students and elementary staff were dazzled by the costumes, singing, humor and content. The PreK-3 class, teacher and chaperones returned to the ferry; and grades 1-6, along with teachers, walked to 2 Wives Pizza for a delicious lunch. After lunch, all headed over to the Public Library of New London where students and teachers were welcomed by the children's librarians/media specialists.
While at the library students were given a tour, exposed to the Dewey Decimal system and how the library is organized. Students then split up into mixed-age groups to complete a scavenger hunt amidst the stacks in the juvenile and children's sections utilizing the card catalog, as well as, other resources. The day culminated with students being issued library cards and checking out a book. Mrs. Burns worked in coordination with Denise Martens (MLS, head of youth services) and Katryna Pierce (Co-Manager of Teen Services) to make this possible.
Fishers Island families/residents are welcome to take advantage of this opportunity to obtain a Connecticut library card. An application can be accessed through this link: www.plnl.org/fishersisland/ and filling it out. There is a $10.00 fee (typically $25.00). Cards can then be picked up at the Public Library of New London.
