PROGRAM OF STUDIES

Grades 7-12

SY 2021-2022

The 2020‐2021 Fishers Island School Program of Studies has been prepared to help our students and their parents choose a course of study for the secondary school years. Specifically, readers will find helpful information in this publication they can use to make informed decisions about course selections for the 2020‐2021 school year and beyond.

Fishers Island Union Free School provides students with high quality and rigorous core curriculum in mathematics, English language arts, social studies, science, and Spanish. Additionally, a wide range of choices in required and self‐selective courses in the arts, career development and occupational studies, health / physical education / family and consumer sciences, and technology (STEM) education is available to all students. After having pre‐registered for the required courses, students will want to select elective courses based on their interest, skills, and goals they have for their future beyond high school.

The educational program at Fishers Island School also offers students the opportunity to broaden their learning experiences outside the classroom. Consequently, they can take advantage of an array of co‐curricular and extra‐curricular activities within the school environment and the extended Fishers Island community. As a School‐Wide Enrichment Model School, students meet a variety of interesting guest speakers through our Viking Voyages program and participate in hands‐on SEEK mini‐courses such as aviation or basic auto maintenance. Some of the many other options available include clubs, school sports, student council, drama, community center activities and community service projects. All of these activities provide opportunities for students to pursue their interests and to enjoy time with their peers and community mentors.

Students and their parents/guardians should jointly review this publication and discuss course options thoroughly. Prior to selecting courses for the next year, it is recommended that students seek assistance from their school counselor in the Guidance Office. Remember, secondary school courses become the foundation for future higher education and training that support a student’s personal goals for career and life.

The administration, faculty, and staff of Fishers Island School are here to provide all students with the resources, support, and encouragement they will need to be successful in the next school year. Please take advantage of these resources as you plan your course of studies for 2020‐2021.
